Project Term 2 years

The Aim, the Signaficance, and the Expected Outcomes of the Project:

The present condition of the historical buildings must be studied before any conservation implementation. Within the scope of these studies, the scientific analysis of the characteristics and compositions of the building materials is one of the fundamental issues. These investigations have great importance in determination of new materials compatible with old ones. The necessity of these researches was indicated in the conventions and regulations related with the conservation of historic buildings. In this context, the aim of this research is to realize scientific and technical investigations on the characteristics of mortars and plasters and to provide preliminary knowledge for determination of new materials for the historical buildings in the Western Anatolia.

In the research;

  • historical buildings from which samples will be taken will be determined through field surveys,
  • samples will be taken from the determined buildings,
  • collected samples will be classified according to the dates,
  • laboratory researches will be realized in order to identify the physical and raw material characteristics of the samples,
  • information which will be obtained in the result of the analysis will be evaluated and data for restoration implementation will be derived.

Preservation of original materials is among the essential principles of the process of restoration. For this reason, this research which will provide preliminary data for preservation decisions has a scientific importance. On the other hand, since there is no published research related with the original material characteristics of the historical buildings in Western Anatolia, this study becomes more important.
