Transport behavior of small molecules in polymers affects many industrial applications due to the increasing emphasis on reducing emissions from commercial processes. The knowledge of transport properties in polymers is prerequisite in the design of many consumer products and establishes the information necessary to design enviromentally safer processes. Besides devolatilization process, diffusion in polymers controls many important applications. A few examples include time controlled release products, paints and coatings, polymerization reactions, film production, packaging and barrier membrane synthesis, dyeing of fabrics .

In this project, transport behaviour and equilibrium characteristics of buthylacrylate-methylmethacrylate copolymer system used as a paint binder in indoor and outdoor paint formulation will be investigated. The rate of release of unreacted monomers to the environment (buthylacrylate and methylmethacrylate ) and moisture related degradation of the paint will be determined by measuring the diffusivity and solubility of monomers and water in the pure polymer and in the paint. In addition the substantial effect of pigments , fillers, and various additives on the transport rate of monomers and moisture will be gauged. Finally based on the data collected, correlations to predict the concentration and temperature dependency of solubility and diffusion coefficients will be obtained.
