Credit Structure: (3-0)3 Description : Atomic structure and bonding in solids. Crystal structures. Imperfections in solids. Diffusion. Mechanical Properties of Metals. Dislocations and strengthening mechanisms. Fracture. Phase diagrams and phase transformations in metals. Thermal processing of metals. Course Objectives : The aim of the course is to introduce basic concepts of materials, mechanical behaviour and testing of metals, failure and fracture of metals, phase diagrams and alteration of mechanical properties due to phase transformations to the mechanical engineering students.
