Description :

Vector analysis, matrices, determinants, systems of lineer equations. Linear transformation. Complex numbers and variables. Fundemental theorem of integral calculus. Harmonic Functions. Taylor’s series. Singular points. Geometric representation of complex variables and conformal mapping.

Course Objectives :

This course is mainly designed to give second year mechanical engineering students fundamental concepts of vector algebra,linear algebra, complex numbers and complex analytical functions relevant to their fields.

Part I– Vector Analysis 

1-     Introduction to vectors, vector fields,curves in space (2 weeks)

2-     Gradient of a vector function;applications.(1 week)

3-     Divergence,  curl of a vector field;applications.(1 week)

4-     Line,Surface and Volume Integrals(1 week)

5-     Integral Theorems(1.5 weeks)

 

Part II- Fundamentals of  Linear Algebra

1-     Matrices, matrix manipulation.(1 week)

2-     Determinants, rank of a matrix. (1 week)

3-     Linear Systems of Equations-Methods of solution(2 weeks)

4-     Eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix(1.5 weeks)

5-      Complex number manipulation, algebra of complex numbers, complex analytic functions.(2 weeks)

Homeworks, Quizzes, Projects:

The students are required to solve assigned  problems.
