Interest to the alternative, renewable and environment friendly
energy resources has been growing as a result of shortcomings in
today’s energy resources and environmental problems generated by
fossil origined resources, recently. Our country, especially, the
Agean Region is potentially rich in alternative energy resources
such as geothermal, wind, and solar energies.
The field of
geothermal and wind energy covers many areas that may be attractive to many engineering
disciplines such as Geology, Geophysics, Mechanical, Electrical, Energy, and Environmental
Engineering as well as Basic Sciences. Therefore, studying on this field requires
an
interdisciplinary approach.
In this
context, recently, a task force group has been established at Mechanical Engineering
Department of Izmir Institute of Technology, aiming to be a core for a prospective
Research and Application Center, Institute or similar organizations. The goals of this
Task Force Group are:
*
Giving a start
for documentation center in geothermal and wind energy areas. For this purpose, collecting
and classifying books, manuals, periodicals, standards, laws, and regulations etc.
*
Starting a
pilot study to enable the usage of geothermal resources on our campus.
*
Establishing a
test laboratory for any equipment used in geothermal systems.
