Design Credit Structure: (3+0) 3 Description : Introduction to Basic Machinery Knowledge. Overview of Strength of Materials, Material Knowledge, Tolerances. Design of Screws, Welding and Joints. Energy Storing and Dissipating Elements. Shafts, Belts and Chains. Course Objectives : This course is intended to give the juniors a systematic approach to the science of machine design. The students are required to acquire the fundamentals of mechanical elements and an independent design initiative. Prerequisites : ME 224 Strength of Materials is recommended. Textbook : J. E. Shigley, C. R. Mischke, “Mechanical Engineering Design”, 5th Edition, McGraw-Hill International Editions. 6th Edition has also been published with visual improvements. Either works well. References : To be discussed in the classroom.
