TURKISH REPUBLIC
MINISTRY OF TRANSPORTATION
MINISTER
24 August, 1994
Dear Mr. Ergun Ozakat,
Our country has advanced in the telecommunication area in a very short time. Our "Turksat" satellite opened service to Europe and Asia last week.
The SEA-ME-WE 2 under sea fiber optic cable was put into service on August 8, 1994 and connects France, Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Singapore and some more countries. This cable makes available 1,935 additional communication channels that can be used for telephone, telex, fax, and data transfer with these countries.
On the 27th July, 1994 an agreement was signed to put another fiber optic cable into use on the 18th of March, 1996 which will connect Turkey, Ukraine, Russia and Italy.
Aircraft landing strips 2*1,800 meters will be made next to the land allocated for the Alacati Technology Park. The Izmir airport (1 hour to Alacati by road)serves about 1,000 regular and 5,000 charter planes per year, counting only the foreign companies landing and taking off. This figure is increasing rapidly.
I wish you all the best for the book you are preparing,
Yours sincerely,
MEHMET KOSTEPEN
Minister
