CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES
COMMITEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS
April 12, 1993
His Excellency Suleyman Demirel
Prime Minister of Turkey
Government House
Ankara, Turkey
Dear Mr. Prime Minister,
I write to commend for the initiative to create the Turkish
Environmental Technology Park and to salute its inauguration.
This commendable initiative is an important and tangible application
of
the spirit of the Earth Summit in Rio de Janairo, Brazil in 1992
which called
for a global partnership between developing and more
industrialized countries
in part through the transfer of environmentally sound technologies.
Your leadership on this matter is providing your great country a unique
opportunity not only to meeet and solve its own environmental
challenges but
also to export environmental technology to other
developing countries in a
broader region. The environmental
challenges you confront in such areas as air
pollution, water pollution, waste management, land use and
soil erosion, noise
and maintaining biodiversity are enormous. But through your leadership
on
this issue and through the Park, you will be able to lead a
larger region into the
21st century.
I commend you and your colleagues involved in the Izmir Environmental
Technology Park. You can be proud of what you are doing and the
United
States can be proud of our multifaceted associations with
Turkey and our
expanding cooperation which will help cement close
and strong bilateral ties
into the next Century.
