Following extract is from the "Turk Telecom Magazine 1999 Special Edition"
"At the beginning of 1980's Turk Telekom, former PTT, took substantial decisions
to expand its network and to increase the line penetration, and initiated establishment of the fiber optic cables and digital exchanges to
enhance the digital capability of the telecommunications infrastructure country-wide.
The total lenght of fiber optic cables in domestic network has now reached 52,000 km. Meanwhile, Turk Telekom has participated in the establishment
and financing of wide range of international cable projects in connection with the objective
of enhancing the international communications as well as transit facilities. Acomodating many terminal
points of international fiber optic cable systems laid among almost all its neighboring countries
beside the long-range international cables.
Turkey has now become a telecommunications hub in its region.
EMOS-1 : 3,100 km. for digital signals 2*140 Mbit/s.
SEA ME WE 2: 18,000 km. in service since 1994.
ITUR: 3,500 km. 565 Mbit/s since 1996.
KAFOS: 600 km. 622 Mbit/s since 1997.
TAE: 27,000 km. since 1998.
TBL: 1,580 km. 622 Mbit/s since 1997-1998.
SEA-ME-WE- 3: 39,000 km. 20 Gbit/s since 1999.
TURMEOS-1: Istanbul Marmaris. 565 Mbit/s.
TURCYOS-1: 113 km. 565 Mbit/s since 1994.
