Clean Energy Village

A STEP TO SUSTAINABLE WORLD

EVER LASTING ENERGY RESEARCH AND APPLICATION CENTER

SOLAR VILLAGE

At the end of XX. century, mankind has turned to more clean, renewable energies than non-renewable and polluting ones. Studies are intensively going on at these issues and although technologies are at their development stage and the products are improving, benefiting from renewables are growing rapidly. XXI. century will be a century of the wide spreading usage of renewable energies in many areas.

Mediterranean terrain is a suitable geographical region where renewable energies can be utilized abundantly. From this aspect, a Solar Village is taken into consideration to put renewable energies directly into application. This unique village will serve from many point of views as to show people renewables are really working, to show the new improvements in renewables, to monitor and find the short comings of new products, to train people on the usage of renewables, etc.

The village will be international center for carrying out renewable energy R&D applications and is believed that the experiences gained here will proliferate in near future to other countries.

MISSSION OF THE PROJECT

The mission of the Everlasting Energy Research and Application Center, or shortly Solar Village is to demonstrate and apply new developments on renewable energy, stimulate international relations on renewable energy applications, and also spread the experiences gained here to all the countries.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the project is to show the usage of renewable energies for domestic, industry, transport and communication purposes and establish a link between the users and the producers on renewable energy applications. Besides, experimenting and monitoring new products and research for efficient, durable, long lasting, inexpensive and safe ways of the renewable energy using equipment are also the main aims of the project.

National and international relations will stimulate and give impetus to improvements in these areas. Solar Village, as an international center on renewable energy applications will be a place for gathering brains working on these areas and in conclusion wil give fruitful results to mankind.

Educational and training activities on renewable energy usage will also be considered.

BENEFITS

* This village will be unique in the world that uses only renewable energies to give upgraded living standards.

* This village will be a center with scientists from all over the world who visit and contribute to new improvements. In this way, a new impetus will be given to renewable energies' application. While the world is tending to use more cleaner energies, this application area will draw people'attraction and this application may proliferate in near future.

* There are very many locations in Mediterranean area and Aegean Sea, and due to the inconveniences for living on them, they are staying as virgin lands. This project will also open an opportunity to these locations to make them livible and inhabitable areas. They may become attractive locations for tourism industries in this way as well.

* Educational and training activities with application on the proper usage of diffferent renewable energy sources in different areas will be an opportunity to ones that wish to be trained in these areas. This will also create some new job opportunities for many countries.

* The settlement area will show people how environmental protection can be put into action properly.

* Using renewable energies in industrial and agriculture purposes will also show people how they are applied and open new fields of application possibilities on these areas.

* The products of industrial and agriculture applications can be sold to cover management expenses.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Schematic block diagram of the Solar Village as a first approximation is given on the following page. According to this diagram, the facilities can be divided into seven blocks:

1) Water Supplying Block.

2) Power Block.

3) Thermal Storage Block.

4) Waste Management Block.

5) Research and Technological Facilities Block.

6) Industry and Agriculture Block.

7) Houses and Living Area Block.

As the connections between the blocks are shown, ideas on blocks and their functions are described briefly as following:

1) WATER SUPPLY BLOCK

This block consists of,

a) solar desalination units,
b) storage tanks,
c) necessary pumps and piping,
d) control unit for potable water.

Solar desalination units will use sea water to get drinkable and potable water for domestic use.

Salt will be produced from these units and may be sold.

Drinking water and potable water quality will be controlled and necessary additives will be mixed at the control unit.

Pumps used in this block for pumping water to storage tanks will be driven by the power supplied from the Power Block.

2) POWER BLOCK

This block consists of,
a) wind turbines (wind to electricity converters,),
b) PV arrays (solar to electricity converters),
c) concentrated collectors and solar farm(solar to thermal to electricity convertors),
d) biogas electric generator (biogas to electricity convertors),
e) fuel-cells (Hydrogen-oxygen to electricity convertor),
f) electricity storage and convertor system to 220 V, 50 Hz AC current,
g) control and monitoring unit.

3) THERMAL STORAGE BLOCK

Storage block consists of,
a) flat-plate, vacuum-tube and concentrating solar collectors,
b) solar farm,
c) heat storage pool and tanks,
d) heat exchangers.

4) WASTE MANAGEMENT BLOCK

This block consists of,
a) biogas production units,
b) cleaning unit,
c) waste seperation unit.

5) RESEARCH AND TECHNICAL FACILITIES UNIT

This block is the heart of the village. All monitoring and control processes, data collection, research acticities, maintenance will be carried on in this block.

Communication center will take place in this block.

6) INDUSTRY AND AGRICULTURE BLOCK

a) Agriculture
Agriculture activities (planting and growing of vegetables and fruits) will be carried out with greenhouse complexes; especially linear Fresnel lenses will be used for efficiency improvements.

Drying of vegetables and fruits by solar energy in dryers will be caried out in this block.

b) Industry
Some soft industrial applications, such as fish processing, milk products, freezing of agricultural products will take place in this block.

7) HOUSES AND LIVING AREA BLOCK

a) Houses
in this block, inhabitants will live in houses which benefit from solar energy passively and actively. The population of the settlement area is taken to be 100 for the first step for calculations, but this number may increase after the establishment of the village. In houses cooking will be done by using biogas and hydrogen gas provided from blocks 2 and 4.

Illumination and other utensils will be powered by electricity supplied from block 2. Houses will be as self sufficient as possible through the whole year from the heating and cooling facilities point of view but as needed, they may benefit from the other blocks' production.

b) Health Center
A small center or dispensary will exist to solve health problem of the people living in the village in a certain degree.

c) Meeting Hall
Meeting Hall with its accesories will serve for seminars, symposiums and educational and training activities.

d) Laundry and Ironing Center
In this center, cloth washing and ironing will be carried out.

e) Shopping center and cafeteria
The center will serve to the people living in the village and food, vegetables and other necessary needs will be sold in this center.

ECEONOMICAL ASSESSMENT

Preliminary calculations for a population of 100 people have been done in detail and economic assessment was based on these calculations.

PARTICIPATION

Solar Village is going to be an international center for renewable energy research and applications. It will be a demonstration unit in search of viable methods. finally leading in each activity to new technological knowledges which will lead to creation of academic and economic value added results.

Geographically Turkey is situated in an advantageous situation. Cesme Peninsula is very rich for solar, wind, wind to hydrogen, geothermal, photovoltaic energies. There are 330 sunny days in a year in this region with hot thermal baths all over the place. Geothermal energy is from the salt water seeping to underground and coming back to surface as hot springs .

Opportunities exist at various levels of co-operation and realization of the Solar Village. Universities, Research Centers, governmental organiations, funding agencies, private sector, European Union, United Nations and other organizations who are interested in the develoopment of renewable energy applications can participate as a founder of Solar Village. We also look forward for any positive suggestions too.

We are a Non-Governmental Organization.
